Rehabilitation of Ciliverghe landfill, Brescia (IT)

The rehabilitation plan for the old Ciliverghe Landfill integrates environmental and landscape aspects with energy recovery and new functions, giving back to the territory a large Park, characterized by the theme of renewable energy, where each area finds its specific function.
The objectives of the remediation project are listed below:
→ to grant environmental sustainability of the landfill reaching, by means of the innovative in situ aeration process, a final quality level in balance with the environment;
→ to reduce the production of greenhouse gases. In situ aeration determines the oxidation of the organic compounds and prevents biogas production;
→ to control the quantity and quality of leachate produced. The new cover limits leachate production and, at the same time, it prevents the mummification of waste;
→ to produce renawable energy. Photovoltaic panels are installed on the landfill and plants with oily seeds are cultivated for the production of biodiesel;
→ to performe low-cost treatment on new leachate without the use of non-renawable energy. A phytoremediation plant is built with oily essences;
→ to create new purposes for the closed landfill aimed at increasing the value of territory. The project calls for the realization of a public park with green lawn and oily plants as well as plants for slope stabilization, also featuring pedestrian and cycle paths and a lake for sport fishing.
