Study of the possibility of undertaking remedial and functional landscaping of the Ca’ Rafaneto di Barchi landfill (Pesaro and Urbino Province, IT)

Working in synergy with the University of Padova, who assessed post-operational management options for the landfill, we studied the local scenarios associated with each individual option with a view to ensuring the landfill site was suitable for a fully comprehensive sustainable use by a series of specific activities, i.e. not merely from a strictly environmental, but also from a landscape, territorial and social viewpoint. In particular, the possibility of transforming the site into a large sustainable waste park, intended as a complex territorial system allowing people to investigate the complete waste cycle, with particular emphasis on waste prevention.
A landfill mining intervention will represent an opportunity for morphological redevelopment of the site. Indeed, the project suggests the use of waste mass as a plastic element to be applied in remedial landscaping with the addition of new green spaces featuring typical local landmarks, leading to redefinition of the site as an Integrated Waste Recovery and Reuse Facility comprising a Research Park to support scientific development and sustainable studies.
